What this means - essentially - is that I think it's time, at last, for me to finally put together that Stormtrooper platoon I always intended to. Yes, they're expensive to field, and yes, I may have to do a wee bit more conversions for weapons etc., but...
...we're getting the band back together.
Earlier tonight I delved into the (increasingly dilapidated) shed and dug out the remaining 28 beret-style stormies I've accumulated over the years:
(Sorry for crummy mobile phone pics.) |
And, in addition to the handful of Kasrkin I have (lovely lovely models), I also found this squad of bulkytroopers:
The only real problem I have is that the faces of these beret troopers are at best flat, and at worst almost utterly devoid of detail. Luckily, I have a plan. And it involves Mad Robot Miniatures...but more on them when this project kicks off!
Until next time then...

The original beret Storm Troopers used to be so awesome when they where released. I think I've got a Heavy weapon team of them still lying around. Holler if you got use for them, then I would start digging for them. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI fancy the Kasrkin, though right now I'm working on lists to see if I should keep fielding them as Veterans or swap them back to Storm Troopers. Got about 40 of them, so I'm thinking of splitting them up and giving them different paint schemes to show who's a Veteran and a Scion.
For the heads, you could also be a bit patient and look at your favorite bits dealer. The Scion have about 19 heads in the box per 5 minis, so you'll be able to grab some for cheap for sure.
I got myself some beret heads from Micro Art studios once. They are pretty nice, though it's a pretty hard resin and as you have to trim their necks a bit to fit on the regular models, it's a bit of fiddly work.
Looking forward to see what your models will look like.
Cheers,
HellHenni
Hullo, HellHenni - thanks for swinging by, and thanks in particular for the tips: I'm certainly in no rush!
DeleteGreetings Admiral,
Deleteyou should also keep an eye on Raging Heroes Toughest Girls of the Galaxy: http://www.ragingheroes.com/blogs/news .
They have some awesome detailed miniatures!
I got into their Kickstarter in order to get some of the Troopers to use them as Storm Troopers in the first place. Here are some nice pics of the various models: http://www.ragingheroes.com/blogs/news/9677599-25-troopers-and-more .
As I bought some RH-figures in the past, I know how awesome they look. They are rather slim compared to GWs "Heroic scale", but still fit nice enough and make a nice centerpiece model / unit.
Cheers,
HellHenni
Those stormtroopers were the my 1st purchase in the world of 40k. The 2nd being the 3rd ed. Box set. Good luke and looking forward to seeing thse guys get some paint.
ReplyDeleteThanks, mate. Once I've worked out what I'm doing and how, I'll keep you all informed...!
DeleteYeah, I might have beret heads somewhere (I have spare heads in a shed for each occasion, just like Dr Who).
ReplyDeleteAnd will happily trade sicophants for your bulkytroopers if you want a more homogenised look. (which will give you more beret heads).
Kryten also kept spare heads...
Deletewhat are sicophants, by the way?
Scions ? whatever they are called nowadays.
DeleteI'm very jealous of those stormtroopers. I have 2 squads of bulky troopers myself which will be getting the scion treatment soon. I love the idea of stormtrooper platoons now. Looking forward to seeing these guys progress. Mad Robot are a brilliant company and their sculpts are stunning. I treated myself a little while ago. Definetly worth the postage costs.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it's not just me! Check out that Mad Robot link, folks!
DeleteI really like the old school stormtroopers. Back in third edition I used them as the troopers for an Elysian Drop troop army based on the White Dwarf army list. I need to dig mine out and take a few pictures of them. Looking forward to seeing yours painted.
ReplyDeleteColKG
Me too, KG, and using them as Elysisans would've been a great idea!
DeleteCheers.
Oooh exciting stuff, I recently rediscovered my old copy of WD where the old Stormtroopers were brand new... look forward to seeing what you do with these sir!
ReplyDeleteYeah, after all these years I still don't know whether I love or loathe the bulkytroopers!
ReplyDeleteWatch this space, eh?!
ReplyDeleteI'm sat looking at my desk, and I have a scion tempesty bloke part way through paint, putting him next to my kasrkin, he's okay. scale wise he fits, but the model is just.. too fancy, too many gribbly bits of gothic touched for my style of Guard.
ReplyDeletethe kasrkin are all business, as were the old bulkytroopers, i'm going to paint this new bloke as close to the kasrkin i have for a test, but dammit why couldnt they have just made plastic kasrkin...
Karitas - you've hit the nail absolutely on the head. Why couldn't they just make plastic Kasrkin?
DeleteI think that's the problem with the majority of the new miniatures "too fancy, too many gribbly bits of gothic" - in every range. I think the designers need a reminder that sometimes less is more
DeleteCouldn't agree more on this. All started with those Dark Vengeance Chaos marines for me. Turned me off on painting them up completely.
DeleteSorry for the delayed reply, Admiral. Stormies, in whatever iteration, are a great opportunity to show what a player loves about the Guard. Great opportunities for conversion and I'm sure these will be another belter!
ReplyDeleteGood to see the old models getting a turn. Do love me some Kasrkins too. (Wish I'd picked some up when they were lots cheaper.)
ReplyDeleteSmall model-count armies is a completely different game too.
