687 - Desert Rats Quad Tractor - 'Dinky' Repaint

Recently I picked up this puppy at Totnes Market. Haggled the fellow down to eight quid, and then repainted its battered outer so that it could act as a tow for my Desert Rats' 25pdr.
I left the driver as he was, of course...

677 - 'Cruel Seas' Mast Storage Conversion

Evening All,

Just another quick update: I've solved the problem of stowing flimsy white metal masts for 'Cruel Seas' vessels, with help from my brand new brace of Fairmile D 'Dog Boats' (from Warlord Games):

As the mast slots snugly into a hole amidships, I've simply carved a recess into the base of the resin hull into which the mast may be placed. A simple length of tape (plastic tape here, but long-term, masking tape is more likely) then keeps the mast in place.

Happy days.

And what will I do when I've got flags and pennants etc. Added to the mast? - Well, who knows? Maybe I'll just carve space for them too, eh?

Oh, and I also got a wee shout-out on the WS&S blog, here (link).

More ship goodness soon, I expect...

...but fear not, Gentle Reader: I promise you I'll be back to 28mm again before too long!

Ta,

670 - Bolt Action Cromwell ARV

Hi All,

I still feel way too poorly to paint, but I did at least manage to get something built this week: my lovely new Cromwell ARV from S and S models:
The metal conversion pieces can come with the Italeri 1/56 kit at a tempting discount, and they're beautifully crisp with next to no flash or mold lines at all!

I chose to pin most of the bits in place, as they're REALLY bulky and heavy, but they are well-measured to fit the kit.

What makes this even better for me, is that I now - at last - have a spare Cromwell 75mm turret, just in case I want to field my CS howitzer variant as a normal tank. Why might I wish to do this? - well, because if I wish to play a squadron of Cromwells in - say - 'What A Tanker!', howitzers are useless in that game: there are no squishy targets. Hmmmm.
Rear view.

(Incidentally, S and S make a Cromwell CS conversion kit, too, as well as other ARVs!)

Another piece of the 11AD puzzle in place.

649 - 3,7 cm PaK 36 auf Selbstfahrlafette Bren(e)

Wotcha.

I finally finished this beauty last night: very happy with it, too!
It's a 3,7 cm PaK 36 auf Selbstfahrlafette Bren(e) - a German conversion of a captured Bren Carrier, and - rather pleasingly - it's made from (further converted from!) a complete conversion kit that Warlord Games actually sells!

Yay! More Brens!

644 - It's Conversion Time!

Being back at work sucks...

...but at least I've got what should be a quick-and-easy project to readily pick up and put down in the evenings: modding some toy cars for Mad Max '34:
And by 'modding', I do of course mean 'sticking some guns to'.

Thanks, eBay!

612 - Bolt Action Jeep Conversion

Alright?
Here's something else I've finally got around to: buying a cheap toy jeep and converting it for tabletop use. Having picked up seven bashed-up old toy jeeps for £3.50 from ebay, I went to work. Some Debris of War stowage, a scrounged steering wheel and a handmade covered windscreen later, this is my new jeep:
Vrooom!

610 - The Chaplain

Hullo, All.

Just a quickie today - aptly enough, just after Remembrance Sunday - I've made a chaplain to look after the spiritual needs of 4KSLI.

Having read surprisingly often about the astonishing everyday bravery of the chaplains who went into war, I was pretty keen one day to have a model in their honour, and since finding new rules for them earlier this year with the release of the 'Battle of the Bulge' campaign book, I knew I had to make one.
(He now has sleeve insignia)

Rather obviously he's made from a plastic British Tommy with a twisted wrist, a paper dog-collar and a paper sacramental scarf-thing. I'm pleased with this one.

Essentially (rules-wise) he can remove a pin each turn from a nearby unit on a lucky roll...but I've given him a medical kit too, so if all else fails he can be a more characterful medic!

Stay safe; We Will Remember Them.

553 - Conversion Time

I actually got the chance to do some modelling tonight.

Specifically, I 'finished' building my Cromwell CS by converting myself a 95mm Howitzer muzzle brake with a biro.

Hooray!

503 - Bolt Action: Core Platoon - A Belated First Look

Hullo, All.
[N.B. The copy in this post is orange and blocky and looks really weird because...well, because Blogger evidently hates me.]

Still taking advantage of Bath Youth Hostel's bandwidth, what follows is the now delightfully obsolete first look at my 28mm Bolt Action core platoon. I say 'now obsolete', because since taking these photos a fortnight ago I have now completely finished (and based) all of the following:

  • 2Lt,
  • Artillery FOO (the Brits get him for free!)
  • 1 Section (10 men, with an LMG)
  • 2 Section (ditto)
  • PIAT team
  • Sniper team
  • 3-man Vickers MMG team
  • 6 pounder A-T gun team
  • Cromwell tank
  • Recce Carrier, and
  • THREE transport Universal Carriers
Allow me to recap. ALL of these units are now completely finished - ALL OF THEM - a hitherto unknown and unbelievably swift rate of painting for your erstwhile humble author...

But THESE are the only ones of which I have photos. So here you are. CAVEAT: As ever, the photos don't do the models justice, and - in case you're unfamiliar with Bolt Action minis - the figures are understandably hunched over...not standing up, bulletproof like my poor ol' Guardsmen (but more about them anon...).
"Group Hug!" - Ah, it feels so long ago...
2Lt (left) and ginger FOO (right, in the dashing leather jacket and scarf). Yes - he's pointing at the map with the stem of his pipe in a very manly way.
PIAT! Note the converted handle on the ammo case...
Sniper and spotter
1 Sect (to make them minimum force-legal, they can be split into two 5-man sections)
A close-up of that map. And the pipe. :)

'Havoc' - my Cromwell. It's covered in weathering powder - as is the recce carrier - but it doesn't show here. More about weathering powder soon, too...
Recce Carrier. It now also has a Boys A-T rifle, which is obsolete history-wise, but the only in-game A-T option at the moment...
Note the stowed Bren, inside the right of the hull. I'm pleased with this wee conversion!
I'm delighted to note that I will actually get to play my first proper game of Bolt Action this weekend, at Gravis's store, Kirton Games (see Curious Constructs link, above), and after that, painting will low down as I take up my workload as an examiner...but there will still be posts, I promise!

Thanks, All.

- Drax.

PS: With luck and a following wind I'll be able to take some proper pics soon...

477 - Check Hedgehogs! [...sorry.]

A Merry 40K Christmas to One-and-All!

Thought I'd see the yuletime out with some 40K for once, as it's been an awfully loooooong time.

Months ago (in the summer, I'm pretty sure) Zzzzzz over at the brilliant Devos IV sent me a bunch of tanks to make - these fantastic 'Ratgard' Hedgehogs [please follow this link here to see the beautifully painted examples on their website]: an swish-looking Anti-Aircraft system atop a Chimera chassis in a proxy Hydra role.

Last week, after a gentle and suitably tactful reminder from the great Zzzzzz, I remembered that I actually needed to finish them.

Here they are in all of their multi-pose awesomeness. NB: Please excuse the background: my modelling space (such as it is) has been overtaken by a 3' tree and a 4-footed grumpy-ass cat:
Lots of super-exciting things are afoot hobby-wise - trust me: there will be news for sure before this year is out...

All the very, very best to you and yours,

- Drax.
