485 - Bolt Action British - First XV

Well done Warlord Games!

These figures are really, really characterful: an absolute joy to behold - I can hardly wait to see them painted up!

Yes, I've been enjoying expanding into 28mm Bolt Action (I already have some 15mm BA bits...)

They were fiddly, though. Cutting down their spines and backpacks in order to insert an equally-trimmed-down spade haft is not a job for new modellers, and one of the tiny Webley service revolvers has irretrievably pinged-off I don't know where, but these models really are smashing!

Here's my first fifteen, with annotations and mildly differing camera angles:
- Drax.

PS: "More on the way"? - Who said that? I never said there was more on the way...

...did I?

  1. Very nice! I can see how they would be a bit fiddly, but well worth the work by the looks of it. It's great being able to make each figure unique, something you don't really get in smaller scales.

    1. Yeah, you're right on all counts: they're. just superb! Interestingly, for someone like me - used to 40K - they seem really hunched over...

...but then these guys are genuinely and literally keeping their heads down!

  2. I've heard much the same on Warlord's plastics. Yet they tend to look just great when all painted up and based. Are these for NW Europe?

    1. Fiddly really isn't bad(!) - it's just the result of non-'heroic' scaling.

I suspect others could paint them way better than me, but yes: a lick of paint will improve them further!

These are indeed NW Europe (late), although they'll probably be Tyne Tees rather than 11th AD, as those are the decals that came with them!

      We'll see, eh?

      Cheers.

  3. The 40k players at the old spot I used to game at got a hold of this game, and are ruining it for the Historical types. It's caused quite a problem, from what I hear.
    Damn those 40k power gamers!
    Lol!

Russian lists with twice as many action dice thingies in the bucket.
    Sneaky outflanking Japanese.
Snipers everywhere you can put a sniper.
    Totally non-historical lists.

I'm sure the rivet counters are having embolisms!
    :D

  4. Ha! Yeah: it's open to abuse if you're so inclined...but who'd want to play that, eh?

I wish I could swing by your store: reckon we'd get on.

Oh, and as for "I'm sure the rivet counters are having embolisms!"

    -- I want that on a tee-shirt!

    1. I've been trying to think of 'power' lists (not something British builds are historically very good at)...

...(or Brits in general, for that matter!)

And without the books in front of me, I came to the realisation that the rules allow me to field an abundance of Jeeps as 'transports' but then - legitimately, as far as I can tell - strip out the transport capacity and load them up with either Heavy Machine Guns or a plethora of Medium Machine Guns.

      That would be shameful...

      ...just shameful.

    2. There were so many things that could have been done (Fireflies instead of Shermans, SAS/LRDG 'gunboats' on wheels, upgunning the Cromwell etc etc). Monty had even been in the desert when the gunboats scored their big successes, he had turned down the idea of having more Fireflies than Shermans.

He might have been good at what he did, however, we should add 'hostile to progress' to his other faults*.

*"resistant to change" just does not cut the mustard in this case. I strongly suspect that without clear direction from his superiors, he would have left deployed para and glider units in the line to be used up, rather than withdrawing them and reforming for future operations.

    3. Yup. I reckon he was too busy putting together the Pompey FC Playbook for the '46 season!

For the record [Loq.] I have no plan AT ALL to play like this with Bolt Action. Chrissake, if I wanted to do that I certainly wouldn't be buying British!

    4. Wearing a shirt that said 'I'm sure the rivet counters are having embolisms' would probably give the rivet counters embolisms.
      :D

  5. Ooh, those look nice! I recently saw some unpainted BA models in the flesh. They look nice. I really want to paint one. Just have to find the time.

I think you should go 11th AD. Just hand paint the shoulder patches :-)

    1. Actually mate, as soon as I typed that earlier I immediately thought, 'Y'know Drax, why shouldn't you just paint the damn patches on?'

      Bugger.

    2. No time like the present. :)

    3. I painted some on my 15mm 11th ad. Splotch of yellow with some black inside is pretty quick to do. Probably actually faster than decals. :-)

    4. Dai, I think they'll need at least a splash of basecoat on first!

And yes, Cameron: that's an excellent point you've made there mate - thank you! Of course it'll be quicker! Genius!

And I love that you play everything, in every scale. It is something I can aspire to some day!
