472 - '6MMRPC' #10 - Taking Damage

Just a quick 'Mountain Reduction' update - and I'm still running a week behind, so this is the last week's offering. The week before (what should've been #9) was the completion post for my Flames company. So there.

For the first time ever, I've made a start on some polystyrene damage markers. This is my prototype, form an idea from an idea I found on 'Take the High Groud' - here [link]:
So far, it's just got a grey priming on top of PVA (not entirely successfully), and although it's intended for Flames of War, I can't access any of my toys at the moment so here's an old IG Stormtrooper for scale. It's based on a fivepenny piece. Obviously, it'll need some depth and colour paited on it yet...

Hmm...so the challenge has not fallen by the wayside yet. Here's to it continuing...

...because I'm broke.

- Drax.

And yes, Zombtober did escape me after all. Quelle surprise.

  1. That'll look cool once you've put some paint on it. Good to see you getting back into the groove with the painting.

    1. The stupid-stupid, two-yeear-course-in-five-weeks teaching pressure is over now, so I'm slowly getting back into it whilst catching up on everything I didn't get done over the last month-and-a-half.

  2. Wow. It's a 1st ed storm trooper. I mentioned this to someone a few days ago. Strange coincidence.
I quite like the flame/explosion markers that are being done these days. Specifically the ones made of wire and flock and copious amounts of CA glue. Will your polysytrene marker stand up to much wear and tear? I know that stuff tends to be all over the place when you open a new box with it as the packing material.....

    1. Love 'em: http://admiraldrax.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Stormtroopers

In answer to your other points, I love the wire and flock ones too, but I feel they're a bit beyond me at the mo. (Pricey, too.)

Oh, and no: the eventual red/black/grey/white colours will mean that the odd bit of 'styrene chipping off won't be an issue, BUT the damned fivepence has already snapped off. Time for a paperclip base instead I think: a loop at the bottom with a central tang going up and through.

      Ho-hum.

  3. Looks good! Once paint is added it should stop the "flaking" away of the bloody stuff!

    1. Thanks! Let us hope so, but see my answer to daveb, above.

  4. How heavy is the marker? Looks pretty cool, and agree, paint is going to make it :).

    1. About the weight of a Dime, currently (maybe not even that), but as I noted to daveb above, I'll be replacing the coin with a wire loop instead.

What I failed to mention in this post is that part of the rationale behind this is that hate the feel of cotton wool, and don't fancy the prospect of painting it!

  5. Hate the feel of cotton wool??? Weirdo.

I like the idea. What have you been sculpting it with?

Is the wire going to be heavy enough?

Have you thought about basing it with a washer?

    1. .... Read the whole post Dai.... Duh. Polystyrene seems super annoying messy though?

    2. The washer would be a good idea - thanks.

And as for the 'weirdo' bit? - Fair comment!

  6. looks like a promising start, should make some great thematic atmosphere to your games, something my own group has been thinking of doing for quite a while.

Also I'm Jealous of your ability to paint tiny, tiny figures so well, 28mm is as small as I think I could go, keep up the great work.

    Cheers, Cuthbo

    1. Thanks, Cuthbo - although a 'start' really is all you could call it: it's a prototype for sure.

As for 15mm? Thanks awfully for the compliment, but really (the way I do it at least) it's easier than 18mm...and FAR more forgiving, as you don't have to paint any details! British units in particular are super-easy, as everything's drab - literally!
