122 New Infantry Company Structure

Well,

I've been fiddling about with this, and a number of you have already put up with my occasional groans, but I've decided (yeah, right!) to focus less on my light infantry - keeping them as an option for fun or for Apocalypse (when chance arises). This will be sponsored in part by financial constraints.*

Here they are as they were. Two companies - one infantry coy (three platoons of 35 pax each) and one fire support coy (three platoons of heavy weapons, including one mortar platoon):
Now, after a bit of playtesting and the decision to 'let go' of my babies, I'll be fielding the following; the idea being that the 24th Cadian is now more tactically flexible at company-, rather than battalion level:

HQ:
Company Commander w. p/wpn; medic; standard; vox; plasma gun = 125pts

TP:
1Pl = 495pts:
Platoon Commander w. p/wpn; vox; 3 x grenade launchers = 60pts
1 (inf) Sect w. vox; plasma gun = 70pts
2 (inf) Sect w. vox; melta gun = 65pts
3 (inf) Sect w. vox; grenade launcher = 60pts
4 (HW) Sect w. 3 x missile launchers = 90pts
5 (HW) Sect w. 3 x autocannon = 75pts
6 (spec) Sect w. 2 x melta guns; 1 x demo charge = 75pts

2Pl = 485pts:
Platoon Commander w. p/wpn; vox; 3 x grenade launchers = 60pts
1 (inf) Sect w. vox; plasma gun = 70pts
2 (inf) Sect w. vox; melta gun = 65pts
3 (inf) Sect w. vox; grenade launcher = 60pts
4 (HW) Sect w. 3 x lascannon = 105pts
5 (HW) Sect w. 3 x heavy bolters = 75pts
6 (spec) Sect w. 3 x flamers = 50pts

3Pl = 425pts
Platoon Commander w. p/wpn; vox; 3 x grenade launchers = 60pts
1 (inf) Sect w. vox; plasma gun = 70pts
2 (inf) Sect w. vox; melta gun = 65pts
3 (inf) Sect w. vox; grenade launcher = 60pts
3 (HW) Sect w. 3 x mortars = 60pts
4 (HW) Sect w. 3 x mortars = 60pts
5 (spec) Sect w. 3 x flamers = 50pts

= 1530pts.

The rearranging/repainting/reassignment of the first two platoons is almost finished, and 3 platoon will follow in slow-time afterwards (I've other priorities).

Yes, I know it's not everyone's dream list, and of course it's not the most competitive, but it can pretty much hold its own, and please don't assume I go for a static gunline - everything except the heavy weapons squads is designed for advance where necessary. Mind you, none of it is cut out for assault!

So, I'm interested in your thoughts, and I'll pose them for a pic as soon as they're done.

Cheers,

- Drax.

*The coffers are empty and I've a sprog on the way, so I'll be selling stuff soon, including some vintage models and decent conversions. Look out for old-style 'assault cannon' sentinels; praetorians; ogryns; converted Cadian roughriders; converted Arbites bikers; a selection of Arbites; assorted WFB orky stuff and other 40k metals.

  1. Always good to see the 24th lined up for action. Can't wait to see the next battle results.

  2. Been waiting to see this--looks like a standard infantry company.

What's the structure of the whole battalion? (at least in theory, if not an actuality)

  3. Love that picture Drax... You must be damn proud to have such a fine looking body of men :)

As for the list - It looks good - very shooty, compared to what i have planned under the new codex. One thing i noticed is that you take a lot of flamers (which i virtually never take) - so my question is, why? Do you find they are good under certain curcumstances?

  4. I like it. other than as Paul stated, I'm not so sure about the flamers. maybe sniper rifles instead. but that might also just be my style.

you're sellin the praetorians? I'd thought about selling mine off, or getting a lot more.

I was hoping the rumors of plastic greatcoat guard were going to help me decide.

  5. post up what you're selling as-and-when so we can have a gander!!

  6. If I haven't said so already, congrats on your future mini-me! (In a few years, you'll hopefully have a "captive" regular opponent... :D)

The lists is very nice - a lot of variety in terms of heavy weapons, which gives you a nice amount of options.

Flamers are always good - between BS3, the sheer potential in terms of automatic hits and the removal of cover saves, flamers are a great choice, particularly for guard, in my opinion.

Presumably, the idea is that the first infantry section that gets gobbled up by that mob of twenty orks gets avenged by the three-flamer spec sections jumping up and giving the greenskins some promethium love?

  7. Love the pic mate, nothing like your army set up in all it's glory to get your heart going.

Is you list based on what models you already have?

  8. That is most impressive, Drax - Nothing like the look of rank upon rank of guardsmen!

Being a treadhead m'self, I'm equally pleased to see all the tanks flanking your infantry. Beautiful stuff! That reminds me, I need to build more Wyverns...

    Keep up the great work!

  9. Cool, thanks.

To answer questions: yes, it is based on my current models (and a fluffiness I enjoy) and yes there are two flamer squads.

The rationale behind them is that I used to use two or three 5-man remnant squads with flamers under the last codex, and they were a real thorn for the enemy. the new versions have three flamers and an extra man for not much more cost, and thought they're not so great against MEQs, they're simply brilliant against anything else, especially as I tend to play with a lot of cover. I also used to play a lot of guard-on-guard.

I'm as yet undecided about whether the third platoon will have a flamer section: I might go for snipers instead, though BS3 snipers are something of a waste.

The battalion structure is as yet undecided(!) but I did present it as it was in post 060 http://admiraldrax.blogspot.com/2008/11/060-force-organisation.html
I'll do the same at some point soon. Maybe I'll think about it tonight.

As for selling stuff? Watch this space.

    Cheers,

    - Drax.

  10. Thanks, 7th! You'll be seeing more of them soonish!

  11. That is so awesome! Light infantry is such an awesome force. I never truly appreciated it until I fielded more than 65 men in a 750 point game last month. You're army looks sweeeet!

  12. Nice list, very fluffy. I'm starting to get real reservations about deploying any heavy weapon apart from mortars in a heavy weapon team ... To give you an example I lost a full missile launcher HWT and a whole command squad to a single battle cannon shot ... one S6 hit can force a leadership test on a Ld7 unit - that's a shallow AND expensive unit! Three lascannons are 105pts, 3 twin-linked lascannons on the vendetta are 130pts... which would you choose?

Whereas mortar spam can barrage the opposition into next week - constantly planting annoying hits on his bods from a 'invulnerable' unit... at 60 pts.

The new anti-tank is definitely the meltagun in a transport, or the meltabomb if you can catch something on the flank.

  13. On another thought, if you do want Light Infantry to work you need to expand the options. Something like this:

Hit them in the flank with penal/harker/al'rahem while challenging up the middle with troops/chimeras and pinging them with mortar spam (causing multiple wounds/pinning tests)

Drop in some snipers/deep strikers and you're challenging them on multiple levels without relying on 'tank' tanks.

Upgrade your hellhounds with multimeltas and drop in a vendetta for the vets/stormies...

    No heavy tank allowed.

  14. 164 infantry and 18 heavy weapons. Those are impressive numbers, but you're 30 points over - so you could drop a couple of plasma guns to get it 100 percent legal.
Don't sell the Riders, yet. Maybe sell a tank or two instead. The price of metal minis is going up, and if you want them back in the future the price will be collossal. Are they lancers or the now-obsolete dragoon style ones with lasguns?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thanks, chaps. I actually like how vulnerable the guard are, and if they die in droves as an unsupported infantry company...well, it serves them right for leaving home without some friends!

I know the vendetta wins hands-down - so does the hydra compared to an autocannon squad, but I've never yet played competitively, and I don't plan to start soon.

And the roughriders are going. They have lances, but cadian torsos/arms/heads and the metal legs have the fur trim filed off them.

  16. I got to hand it to you Drax, your guard look impressive set out like that.
I'm sure their shooting power would cause most armies problems.

  17. A grand sight if ever there was one! Smashing good work, old boy!
