507 - 6MMRPC 4: Deskspace

Hullo!

I'm conscious that some of my fellow bloggers have been sharing pictures of their painting areas 'cleared for action' with the onset of 6MMRPC...so, er, here's mine:
I don't have a painting area any more. I have my desk, which is supposed to be for me to do all of my planning, marking, domestic paperwork and - as my second, seasonal job - examining.

Yup.

However...

It's also used by No.1 Daughter as a desk for her wonderful crazy-ass creative writing and drawing and by No.2 Daughter as a novelty, no-fear-of-her-ever-falling-off-here-at-all climbing frame and cat-chasing platform. Mrs. Drax kindly uses it as a repository for all the crap I leave all over the downstairs of the house too, so it's not what you'd call 'ideal' as a painting station.

My core paints, hobby tools and models-in-progress are all kept in the draws down the left column, with the top-most being locked with the sharp stuff in (luckily, both daughters are tremendously good at not opening things they're told not to open - praise the Emperor).

If you're wondering why I suffer this, it boils down to three things: (1) we've become rubbish at keeping a tidier house since having kids, (2) I'm lazy and disorganised, and (3) it is the ONLY space in our tiny cottage that combines a sturdy horizontal plane at the correct height with access to decent lighting. I kid you not.

Against the left wall, in the corner, are stacked some hobby boxes (I'm still astounded that Mrs. Drax lets me do this - in full public view) and you might even see the sturdy cardboard box sent by Da Masta Cheef [link] with his nine orks in it: I've made a slow start on painting them at last, and based my FoW Vickers Platoon, so a little more progress for 6mmrpc week 2.

Yay.

  1. lol, it looks like those Orks have more space available for painting them there than they would have had here!

  2. Nice amount of natural light. It is a bit like a "spot the ball" competition though! Circle where you think Drax's desk is and send it in on the back of a postcard... :-)

  3. Natural light for painting is so nice. I don't get much, so often need to set up (and break down) an outpost at the dining table. Le sigh.

    1. Natural light is indeed brilliant...

...but I never get to enjoy painting in it, as IF it's light out, then I'm either at work (boo!) or with the family (yay?!).

      So no.

ALL of Drax's painting is done at night...

      ...which explains a lot.

  4. I like it Drax! Gotta love it when your workspace is commandeered by family haha! Oh for the day when we can have dedicated wargames rooms!

    1. At 34, we're still renting(!) but to her credit, whenever Mrs Drax is looking at dream houses on Rightmove.com, she's always kind enough to put aside a 'games room' for the Admiral.

  7. Reading this and seeing those pictures makes me appreciate my hobby room all the more. Not rubbing it in, well, a bit, or.... lots. :P But I do miss out on natural lighting, which is pants.

    2. Ahahaha!

Night time painting is bad too cos it gets my mind going and then I can't sleep due to being all energised to keep painting!

  8. O and perhaps you could train my 11-year-old son to not touch my stuff!!?? >_< I had to put a bloody lock on the door to keep him from stealing in to check out all my Action Force, Star Wars and Transformer toys!

    1. They're very good; we're very lucky.

They're also girls, which helps, I guess.

  9. Always interesting to see other people's hobby set-ups. If you're interested I use DVD cases - fold out flat, left side for balancing paints on and right side for mixing and painting on. Combined with a small tupperware for the paints and models I use this for taking stuff to work when I'm doing nights, and it folds out onto my desk a treat despite the mounds of paperwork. Just a thought.

Anyway congratulations on the well-disciplined nature of the little ones. Good luck with the painting!
